SCOTTISH TRADITIONAL BUILDING FORUM RAISING AWARENESS OF THE CONDITION OF SCOTLAND’S TRADITIONAL BUILDINGS

BEFS welcomes a grant from Historic Environment Scotland to fund the running and coordination of the Scottish Traditional Building Forum. STBF is made up of a network of local traditional building forums with local representation who work together to highlight specific issues relating to traditional buildings and building skills and practices. BEFS aims to raise the profile of the forum and provide guidance and support for STBF and regional forums on widening partnerships and accessing the Scottish Government and Parliament. Further information is available on the STBF website.

Buildings at Risk

The Buildings at Risk Register provides information on properties of architectural or historic merit throughout the country that are considered to be at risk. In October 2014 BEFS held a workshop on the Register. Participants discussed what they value in the BARR, what requires improvement and what potential it holds. Its neutrality was clearly valued but some stakeholders require prioritisation of the buildings to direct public spend and multiple agencies need to promote the use of the data collected. The report of discussions is available here.

Energy Efficiency

The recent consultation proposes a gradual introduction of standards for energy efficiency and condition in private renting housing, using energy performance certificates as a method for assessment. In our response, BEFS highlighted that EPC ratings do not apply readily to traditional buildings, and notes that management practice is a key factor, along with an understanding of how traditional buildings perform.
