Achnamara Clapper Bridge

A wide range of organisations and individuals care for the historic environment across the private, public and voluntary sectors.

Organisation: Forestry Commission Scotland
Project title: Achnamara Clapper Bridge consolidation

The post-medieval Achnamara clapper bridge can be found crossing a burn by the northern shores of Loch Sween in Knapdale (NR 777 869). A partnership project between Forestry Commission Scotland and Archaeology Scotland saw the drystone bridge made safe and accessible by conservation volunteers learning the techniques of drystone masonry consolidation.

The work involved the detailed survey of the structure by terrestrial laser scanning prior to masonry consolidation and repair, guided by a clear project design and recorded by fixed point photography and annotated conservation record sheets.
